Research Report

Each participant of HUSO China 2026 is required to select one major subject from the five disciplines (Biology, Mathematics, Environmental Science, Physics, and Chemistry), and choose 2 to 3 elective subjects from the remaining disciplines. Under the supervision of their respective major mentors, students will complete a research report related to their major subject of study. In HUSO China, each student can plan their project study and research report writing following the process below:

  • You should carefully read through all 14 projects across the 5 subjects, and grasp the following information for each project:

    1. What research question does this project address?

    2. What experiments will be conducted in this project?

    3. What methods will we use to explore this project (e.g., lectures, experiments, theoretical derivation, etc.)

  • Based on your understanding of the 14 study projects, you should confirm your major subject from the five disciplines in advance. The major subject is the discipline where you need to invest the most effort, and you must participate in all project activities under this subject. In addition to actively engaging in the projects of this subject, you are required to complete a research report based on your experimental experience and exploration process in this discipline. You can confirm your major subject by considering the following aspects:

    1. What is your strongest subject? Have you made up your mind to focus on developing in this discipline during your future high school and university studies (e.g., participating in relevant competitions and summer school programs in this subject)? If you have identified your strength subject, you can directly select it as your major subject!

    2. What is your most interested subject? Do you want to explore the information hidden in cells, the laws of object motion, or the truths concealed in numbers? You can confirm your major subject based on your areas of interest.

    3. What is the subject you most want to make a breakthrough in? This subject may not be your current strength or your previous focus of interest, and may even be your current "academic weakness". By selecting this subject as your major subject, the study at HUSO China may help you find the correct learning methods and thinking modes for this discipline, enabling you to address your weaknesses and make a breakthrough in your future studies.

  • HUSO China is a multi-disciplinary comprehensive training program. Therefore, in addition to their major subject, each student should select 2-3 subjects as their elective subjects (due to the limited energy of students, HUSO China does not recommend students to strive for excellence in all subjects). Elective subjects are disciplines that do not require the completion of a research report. The learning process focuses more on understanding and experience, with a lower learning intensity than the major subject. When confirming your elective subjects, you should consider the following questions:

    1. In addition to my most interested subject, what knowledge from other disciplines do I want to explore?

    2. Which other disciplines are more closely related to my current major subject? What interdisciplinary knowledge is involved in the industry I want to engage in the future?

    3. On the basis of maintaining the study of my major subject, can I take this opportunity of HUSO China to address the gaps in my knowledge and ability in other subjects? These questions can serve as the basis for your selection of elective subjects.

  • At HUSO China, research for the 14 projects will take place across several classrooms and laboratories. The specific research projects held in each venue at different times will be announced on-site at HUSO China.

Once HUSO China begins, each participant will receive a blank Course Planning Sheet. Based on their major and elective subjects, students will plan their personal study schedule by referring to the timetable of various research projects. A copy of your study plan will also be kept by the instructors on-site.

    1. You will have 14 available study sessions at HUSO China.

    2. All projects under your major subject are required; you may selectively attend projects from your elective subjects.

    3. You must reserve at least 3 sessions for research report guidance courses.

  • During the 5-day HUSO China study program, you will complete the study of your major and elective subjects in accordance with your study plan. Meanwhile, for your major subject, you should select an instructor as your research report supervisor. You can choose the instructor of the project you are most interested in as your supervisor, or you can select the Chinese teaching assistant of the corresponding subject as your supervisor. We recommend that each student confirm their research report supervisor within the first 7 sessions of the project study (before noon on Day 3). After confirming your research report supervisor, you should verify with the supervisor and register your name.

  • During the study program, you need to complete an experimental report or research review under the guidance of your supervisor (for report writing rules and guidelines, please refer to Part 11 of this Guidebook). You can conceive and write your research report from the following two directions:

    1. Experimental projects: Record the experimental procedures, phenomena, data and conclusions to form a complete experimental report.

    2. Theoretical inquiry projects: Organize the materials and sort out the logic in the learning process, complete a research review, and present your thinking and findings.

Starting from Day 3 of HUSO China, there will be fixed time slots and designated classrooms (laboratories) for research report writing and guidance every day. You can communicate with your supervisor about the fixed time slots for research report guidance. You can also take the initiative to contact the instructor for research report guidance during the time when the supervisor has no scheduled courses.

  • After you complete the first draft of your study report, revise and finalize it under the guidance of your supervisor, you need to submit the finalized study report to your supervisor. The supervisor will determine the award-winning students for some HUSO China awards based on the review of the study reports in this discipline.
